Free marketing does exist on mobile, and it comes from the two companies running the stores. Apple and Google both employ editorial teams that hand-pick games to spotlight, and a good featuring slot can deliver tens or hundreds of thousands of free installs. Here is how that machine actually works, and how real games get into it.

What featuring is

Beyond the algorithmic charts sit human-curated showcases: Apple's Today tab stories, Game of the Day, and themed collections, and Google Play's editors' choice picks and seasonal roundups. Real editors choose these, which means featuring is pitched and earned, not gamed. That is good news for small studios: editors actively love surfacing polished games from unknown teams. It is one of the few places where craft beats ad budget.

What editors look for

Patterns repeat across everything featured:

How pitching works

Both stores run official intake: Apple has a featuring nomination form in App Store Connect, and Google offers similar channels through the Play Console. Pitch six to eight weeks before launch or a major update, editors plan calendars ahead. A good pitch is short and concrete: what makes the game distinctive in two sentences, a proper press kit with video, and any hooks that map to editorial calendars, seasonal moments, platform feature adoption, a strong studio story. Then keep nominating with every meaningful update. Featuring often arrives months after launch, attached to fresh news rather than day one.

The honest caveats

Featuring is a lottery ticket you cannot buy, only qualify for, so never build a launch plan that requires it. And a spotlight amplifies whatever exists: a leaky game with weak retention converts a featuring spike into a graph that goes up and comes straight back down. Fix retention first, then chase the spotlight. When it hits a healthy game, make sure servers can take the load and the store page converts, because the crowd arrives all at once.

Build the game editors like anyway, polished, distinctive, fair, and you win twice: players love those games too, featured or not.
