ASO Basics: How Players Find Your Game Without Ads
App Store Optimization is SEO for the app stores, and it is the cheapest installs you will ever get. The parts that matter, in the order they matter.
A meaningful share of all game installs still start with someone typing into app store search. Those installs are free, they keep arriving while you sleep, and most indie games barely compete for them. ASO, App Store Optimization, is how you do.
The two jobs of ASO
Job one: appear in searches, which is about keywords. Job two: convert the person who lands on your page, which is about visuals. Most founders obsess over the first and neglect the second, yet conversion is usually where the bigger wins live, because it also improves every paid install you ever buy.
Keywords, done simply
Think like a player, not a founder. Nobody searches your game's invented name at launch. They search "offline puzzle games," "cooking games no wifi," "word games free."
- Put your strongest phrase in the title or subtitle, like "Willow's Kitchen: Cooking Dash." Both stores weight these fields heavily
- On iOS, fill the 100 character keyword field completely, no spaces after commas, no words already in your title
- On Google Play, the long description is indexed, so work phrases in naturally
- Target specific phrases first. Ranking well for "relaxing zen puzzle" beats being invisible for "puzzle"
The visual funnel, in priority order
The icon. One recognizable subject, high contrast, no text, readable at thumbnail size. Test candidates cold on people: which would you tap?
The first two screenshots. Most visitors never scroll past them. Lead with actual gameplay and one short benefit caption each. Fake screenshots that misrepresent gameplay boost installs and then destroy retention and ratings, which is a bad trade.
The preview video. First three seconds must show the core loop, assumed muted.
Rating. The difference between 4.5 and 3.9 stars changes conversion dramatically. Prompt for reviews after a happy moment, a big win or a level streak, never during onboarding, and reply to negative reviews since future visitors read the replies.
Treat it as a loop, not a launch task
ASO is never finished. Watch which keywords bring impressions, test one change at a time, and give each change a few weeks of data. Google Play has built-in listing experiments; on iOS, product page optimization does the same job.
Small compounding wins are the point. Better icon, better first screenshot, one better keyword: each nudges conversion, and every nudge lowers your effective cost per install across paid and organic alike. It is unglamorous, steady work, and it is some of the best value marketing a small game can do.
